Flashbacks come flying through my brain of scraped knees, bark covered hands, wild hair, and sweat dripping form my forehead down my cheeks. Feeling tired from all the running around and climbing but still energetic because Grandma’s house was just so much fun. Especially the time of year we got to pick cherries from her cherry trees. It kind of felt like a treasure hunt. We each had our own plastic bags and by the shade of the trees from the hot California summer sun, filled those bags to the best of our 5-7 year old abilities. It blows my mind to think that was almost 25+ years ago. I honestly don’t feel I am old enough to say I have memories from 25+ years ago. Nor can I believe how that time just slipped by like running your hand over the finest silk. While I do miss those times I am filled with such a gratitude that I was there and lucky or blessed enough to have those experiences that every child should be able to have but many do not.
Flash forward to now and I am climbing trees with my own littles collecting cherries from their grandma’s cherry tree. Wow, what a serendipitous moment that was when it really hit me.
Amongst the branches, I started sharing my summer memories as a kid performing the same task that we were now doing, but at my own grandma’s house who has been watching us from heaven for quite some time now. After grandma passed the house was sold and cherry tree’s cut down. All I really have left are memories. It really makes me realize how precious this time is and to absolutely cherish it. One story that managed to find it’s way in our conversation was about the year my grandma collected all of our cherries and made us each our own little cherry pie. Grandma was not in good health at the time, which I knew, and this made her gift even more meaningful to me. Upon finishing that story, Bells insisted that we make our own Cherry Pie. Of course I agreed!
Sitting in our kitchen a day or two later, I decided why not use this opportunity to make a new recipe.
A delicious, yet still leaning on the healthier side, Cherry Pie Recipe. I must say, my family and I have been pretty darn pleased with this recipe and will definitely be making it a summer tradition in our house.
You will find this in the recipe but I want to reiterate what a difference home made whipped cream makes in this recipe. It only takes a couple minutes to whip it up but truly makes all the difference.
Because sharing is caring I have a free downloadable PDF of the recipe below. If you like it please share it with your friends via, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, etc.
